From operator training to UAV testing: Three Obriy configurations

Operator training, joint exercises involving different units, and UAV testing each require a different simulation environment. This is why Obriy is available in three core configurations: Obriy Simulator, Obriy DIS, and Obriy SITL.

The right configuration depends on your specific needs, existing infrastructure, and required level of integration. Depending on the selected configuration, Obriy can serve as a ready-to-use training system for crews, a tool for rehearsing joint scenarios, or an engineering environment for integrating and testing UAV control systems.

Obriy Simulator: A ready-to-use training environment for crews

In the Obriy Simulator configuration, the platform operates as a standalone simulator for training operators of FPV drones and fixed-wing UAVs. Users receive a ready-to-use training environment where they can conduct missions, practise target engagement, and develop crew coordination without connecting external control systems or third-party simulators.

Within each scenario, the platform recreates terrain, weather conditions, friendly and hostile entities, military vehicles, infantry, air defence systems, electronic warfare, and other factors of the modern battlefield. This allows operators to train not only in direct UAV control, but also in route execution, spatial awareness, target detection and engagement, threat response, and mission completion as part of a crew.

For instructors, this configuration provides a fully integrated and controlled training environment: the scenario, object behaviour, and tactical situation are all managed within a single system. Training can be conducted individually or in networked sessions involving multiple participants.

Obriy Simulator is a ready-to-use solution for training centres, military units, and organisations that require a comprehensive environment for operator training and mission rehearsal.

Obriy DIS: A shared simulation environment for integrating different systems

The Obriy DIS configuration is designed for scenarios in which UAV operator training forms part of a broader training process. In this mode, Obriy does not operate in isolation, but connects to other simulators and specialised modules through the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol.

Each connected system can simulate a different component of the scenario, such as UAVs, infantry, ground vehicles, radars, sensor suites, or situational awareness systems. At the same time, all participants share the same tactical picture, receive data on the same entities, and respond consistently to events unfolding within a common synthetic environment.

For example, a target detected by a UAV operator in Obriy can simultaneously appear in an external situational awareness system. Actions by a ground unit simulated in another training system can also affect the course of the drone operator’s mission. This makes it possible to train not only individual roles, but full coordination among the different participants in an operation.

This approach moves beyond the “one simulator, one role” model towards a distributed training environment in which each system is responsible for its own functional area while all systems operate within a shared scenario.

This configuration follows the interoperability principles that underpin modern integrated and NATO-compatible training environments.

Obriy DIS is designed for training centres, systems integrators, and organisations developing multi-role training systems and shared synthetic environments.

Obriy SITL: An engineering environment for external UAV control systems

The Obriy SITL (Software-in-the-Loop) configuration is designed to work with external flight control systems. In this mode, Obriy simulates the environment, terrain, physics, external influences, visual feedback, and scenario events, while the behaviour of the UAV is determined by the connected autopilot, firmware, or other onboard software.

Obriy provides the simulation environment, while SITL reproduces the operation of the autopilot software: it receives data on the UAV’s state and external conditions, processes that information, and determines how the platform responds.

The following can be connected to the simulation:

  • autopilots and their firmware;
  • ground control stations;
  • companion computers;
  • navigation modules;
  • external onboard logic;
  • other UAV software components.

A real flight controller, onboard computer, or other hardware module can be connected in HITL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) mode, allowing its performance to be tested within Obriy’s simulated environment.

This makes it possible to evaluate how a specific control system behaves in a defined scenario, including loss of communications or navigation, exposure to electronic warfare, changing weather conditions, execution of an automated route, and activation of failsafe logic.

For engineering teams, this configuration makes it possible to test system integration, flight modes, failsafe algorithms, interaction with the ground control station, and communication between other system components before conducting real-world trials. For instructors, it enables the creation of training scenarios that closely replicate the actual control architecture of a specific UAV platform.

In this configuration, Obriy serves not only as a training tool, but also as a practical environment for developing, integrating, testing, and debugging UAV solutions.

Obriy SITL is designed for UAV manufacturers, engineering teams, developers of autopilots and control systems, as well as training centres working with specific platforms and software solutions.

The fundamental difference between the configurations lies not in the number of available features, but in the role Obriy plays within the broader system.

Obriy DIS is a component of a distributed simulation environment in which different simulators and systems interact simultaneously.

Obriy SITL is an environment for integrating and testing external UAV control software.
